My Current 5 Favorite Lippies!

So July 29th is National Lipstick Day and what better way to celebrate than with a post of my favorite 5 lippies at the moment? (I chose to mention glosses and stains/balms too since I’m not always wearing lipsticks in the summer months.) Here are the contenders!

Bare Minerals: Marvelous Moxie in Get Ready

bareminerals

This is such a fun & flirty pink color. Perfect for a pop of lip for when you go out with your girlfriends! I even love wearing this with barely any makeup (just mascara and a little of SPF foundation) since it really makes a simple look fun. Plus it’s a pretty moisturizing mixture, so I’m totally into wearing it while I’m out in the summer sun!

BMlips

($18 from bareMinerals)

Eyes Lips Face (ELF) Mineral Lipstick in Runway Pink

elf

If I have a day where I want to channel Audrey Hepburn and be a classic beauty, this color is my absolute go to! It’s actually pretty close to my actual lip color, but it just gives me a slightly pinker, smooth tone. This is my go to “date night” color since it’s not over stated and simply beautiful!

ELFlips

($5 from E.L.F.)

Pixi Shea Butter Lip Balm in Pixi Pink

pixi

I know, I know–it’s not a lipstick per se, BUT the color of this lip balm is so bright, it is a good competitor to a lipstick. I’m serious, this color is almost neon on my lips and I love it!! Especially since it’s so hydrating, I’m damn near obsessed. I will put this on without any makeup just because I love the feel of my lips with it. Also, the staying power of this color is so long lasting!! It really is a worthy lip product!PIXIlips

($8 from Pixi by Petra)

Victoria’s Secret Pure Reflection Lipstick in Champagne

vsSo I went back into the makeup vault and pulled this color out. I was pretty hesitant about this color in the summer when I have a tan since it’s slightly lighter than my actual lips. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the color made my makeup look really fresh and light! Unfortunately, as you can tell by the packaging, this is an old color, so I don’t know what’s similar from VS right now…VSlips

(Generally, I think these lipsticks are $14. Let me know in the comments if you can find a current VS lipstick that is similar!)

Maybelline Elixir in Petal Plush

elixir Last, but not least, is one of my favorite lip products this summer–The Elixir line by Maybelline! I LOVE this formula, it’s so silky smooth on my lips and makes them look plump and perfect! I’ve probably been rocking this more than anything this summer!! Petal Push is my favorite, but I’ve been hunting out the other colors and loving every one!! MABlips( $5.99 online at Target, but generally $8.99 in drugstores. I think they’re on sale at your local Walgreens for $5.39 right now with your membership card!!)

So there you have it! Those are my favorite summer lippies! What are you loving right now? Let me know! (I love to try new options!!) Enjoy your lippies and have a happy National Lipstick Day! Stay fabulous all!

Folly Ventures: Broadway Bites Popup Market

One of the best parts (and worst vice) about working/living in the great city of New York is being able to try numerous delicious dishes from all parts of the world.

Even better yet, NYC makes everything easier by grouping all these fabulously scrumptious food samplings in one place–like the seasonal markets. I’ve been to a couple markets here and there, but the one I am loving right now is Broadway Bites (by Urbanspace) partly because of its awesome collection of food and partly because I can haunt it on my lunch hour! (It’s an easy walk to Herald Square for me!) The market features: 20+ vendors that each show off a couple of each restaurant’s most notable cuisine pieces, cute stands, twinkle lights, a section for “adult beverages”, and a couple of areas to enjoy chowing down with friends!

An added benefit? Most stands accept credit cards, so there’s no need to hit the bank beforehand (unless one stand you really want to try truly doesn’t accept anything but cash–there has only been one of those that I have come across thus far.)

jicamatacos

Pictured above: Jicama Tacos with shredded pork, cabbage, mango, cilantro and a seasoned sauce in a jicama shell. Light, fresh, flavorful, crunchy and absolutely delicious! (Can be found at Jicama: California Street Food)

springrolls

Pictured Above: Spring roll combo (one quinoa with tofu, cabbage, carrots, lettuce and the other quinoa with corn, carrots, lettuce in a curry sauce) with a cabbage/apple/noodle salad. (Can be found at Two Tablespoons) I love this place soooo much that I went back twice! The spring roll combos are fabulous and the noodle salads are soooo freaking yummy! I was sad to learn that the booth is by a catering company and not an actual restaurant…I hope they start one! The drink is a mango fresco. (I sadly can’t remember where I got it…)

padthai

Pictured Above: Chicken Pad Thai–delicious noodles and sauce. Peanut crumble was nice and crunchy and the added lime made the flavors pop even more! I would have liked more veggies, but overall a great amount of food for the price! Unfortunately this place only took cash! 😦 (Can be found at Bangkok Bar)

icecream

Pictured above: Strawberry ice cream between two sugar cookies–I LOVED this ice cream sandwich. I’m a huge strawberry fan and was excited to see the usual ice cream sandwich spiced up a bit. This one kind of reminded me of strawberry shortcake. I also tried an all chocolate one and a cinnamon one that was to die for!–On separate occasions, I promise!! (Can be found at the cart for Melt)

My Thoughts

Everything I have tried at this market I have loved. It’s really a great bunch of vendors and I haven’t been unsatisfied with a single meal. I think my absolute favorites have been more of the lighter options–but that is mostly because the weather has been so hot and those are the types of dishes I crave in the heat! Though overall, I have enjoyed everything I have gotten and tried of my friends’!

IF you decided to make a trip to NYC in the near future and are curious to try Broadway Bites I have a bit of sad new. This market is only going on until August 1st (open 11am-9pm daily), BUT I was happy to learn that Urbanspace will be putting it on again in the fall (October 1st-November 14th). (I will be sure to try it again then and report back!)

So now that I’ve shared my gluttonous lunch hour feasts, what have been some of your favorite lunch spots this summer? Any favorite dishes you love in this heat? Let me know!

As alway, happy exploring my lovelies!

Review: Michael Todd Anti-Aging Skincare Kit

I MAY or may not have a slight addiction to online shopping (so easy, yet so dangerous.) and one of my guilty pleasures are the deal sites–Groupon, Gilt, Rue La La, LivingSocial, HauteLook….oh yes. I have many online kryptonites. Don’t worry though, I usually merely only take pleasure in browsing, but ever so often something jumps out at me that I HAVE to have.

Most recently, it was an anti aging skincare kit by Michael Todd. (which I got for the skincare aspect, not so much the anti aging part since I’m only in my 20s.) Now, to be fair, I have been eyeing Michael Todd products since I’ve seen samples in ipsy– I really like the organic product idea and I have heard pretty good things. So when I saw the kit on LivingSocial for $23 (original price $46) — I snagged it. The following are my (re)views on the kit!

(Note: You can find the exact kit on the Michael Todd website here! (It’s since dropped to $33 on the online store!

The Packaging

2

The actual kit packaging, to me, was nothing special. Seemed like a typical box that you might get at a Macy’s perfume counter.  I especially wasn’t crazy for so much lime green! But the individual products were very cute. I liked the clean style with the lavender and purple colors mixed with a hint of the lime green logo elements. (Note that I said “hint” and not “overly obnoxious amount” coughcough nudgenudge, Micahel Todd.)

The products it contained were:

  • Cleanse: SKIN DEFENDER aha crème facial cleanser – 50 ml / 1.7 fl oz
  • Tone: CRANBERRY ANTIOX hydrating anti-aging toner – 50 ml / 1.7 fl oz
  • Scrub: TROPICAL FRUIT enzyme exfoliant scrub – 40 ml / 1.3 fl oz
  • Hydrate: LIPOSOME ANTIOXIDANT MOISTURIZER with dmae and hyaluronic acid – 40 ml / 1.3 fl oz
  • Treat: PEARL AND SILK facial mask – 40 ml / 1.3 fl oz

The Products

3

First up, the Skin Defender Cleanser. I found this cleaner to do the job pretty well, but it wasn’t as tough as some–so I wouldn’t say it would take off my makeup if I wanted it to. The consistency was milky and rubbed on pretty clear. Overall it felt nice and fresh.

Next up, the Cranberry Antioxident Hydrating Anti Aging Toner. I actually really liked this toner! It smelt fresh and didn’t feel like it had as much alcohol content as other toners–so it didn’t dry out my skin or irritate it in any way. I would so buy this again.

My FAVORITE product in this bundle was the Tropical Fruit Enzyme Exfoliant Scrub –Oh my god you guys, this smelt like a creamsicle on my face!! I was in scented bliss while my face was in exfoliant bliss!! Plus it left my face nice and smooth! This might be my new favorite summer exfoliant!

But with the good, comes the bad…and by that I mean the Liposome Antioxidant Moisturizer with dmae and hyaluronic acid. Okay, maybe that is being harsh. The product itself did its job pretty well, it was very moisturizing and not too greasy which is great–but I was not a fan of the smell. Why? Roses. I don’t know what it is about roses, but sometimes when its melded into products a certain way, it just smells like a dying flower bed. The smell killed it for me, but the outcome was nice. SUCH CONFLICT!

Lastly, the strangest thing in this kit was the Pearl and Silk Facial Mask. I say strange in a good way–I’ve never seen a mask like it. It literally felt silky and rubbed on clear-ish with perl shimmer hues in it. It was like I was covering my face in shimmery moonlight–I’m so not used to my masks looking like that! (Let’s just say my clay masks are a drastic difference!)

The Verdict

So there you have it! All those products in decent travel sizes for $23! Money well spent and possibly more bang for my buck! Though I still think its worth the now $33 online price, it really does make my face feel great without feeling too harsh/damaging. Plus, it’s also organic and a complete routine! It’s worth trying if you want to change up your nightly routine a bit! (I usually take turns with this and my typical products. I like changing it up!)

What do you use for you skincare routine? Have you tried any  Michael Todd products that you love? Let me know! I’m always interested in a great buy! 😉

FollyLife: Fourth of July Fun

So this holiday weekend was a very chaotic one and I meant to document more, but I was having too much fun to remember. (Sorry!) I did manage a couple of decent snaps into the weekend which I will share below!

One thing I was really excited about was this very cute DIY 4th of july mani pictured here:

nails

Isn’t it cute?! Ipsy posted a do it yourself on their blog. If you’re interested in recreating it:  Tutorial here!

I ended up using colors I had that fit the bill for nail polish (pictured below):

RED – 49 Deep Red by Isadora

Blue – 02 Blu by Sally Hansen

White – Blanc by Essie

and the OPI top coat

colors

I didn’t have the manicure tape, so I did a little makeshift version to be cost effective by cutting regular tape into skinny strips.  I was really proud of the outcome and got tons of compliments!

I ended up taking my lovely mani sunning on a lake (Bantam Lake) in Connecticut. I fully enjoyed the fresh air and sun!

lake nails-on-boat Later on I of course was very traditional and went to a BBQ and gorged on numerous delicious foods– all of which dissappeared before I could snap a pic of anything except some festive adult treats that I partook in! They were really yummy!

shotsIf you’re interested in recreating these, I think this link is similar to what they were, click here! (Though I think the middle white part was made with pina colada vodka!)

And of course, what would 4th of July be without fireworks? I got some rather blurry pictures of some below!

fireworks

So that was my weekend: Mani, sun, boating on a lake, eating, adult beverages, and fireworks!

Did you celebrate 4th of July? If so, where did you go & what did you do? I always love to know!

P.S. I’m bringing follypops to bloglovin! So if you’re a bloglovin user, feel free to follow Follypops there!

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara (Review)

So recently I was fortunate enough to snag a deluxe sample/preview of Urban Decay’s newest mascara “Perversion”  during their social media prerelease. (Basically, I got their newsletter/email instructions on how to sign up for a sample and jumped on that faster than a kid in rainboots headed for a puddle.) And let me just say: I’m so happy I did. Here are my thoughts on my new pervy eyes:

The Packaging

ud2

Girrlllllll, look at that body! Make you think of anything? My thoughts: the sexy evil twin to Benefit’s “They’re Real!”. Sleek, metallic and a hint of the signature UD purple style.  The product container’s shape is a little less interesting than Benefit’s, but I won’t cry too hard over that since it’s what’s inside that counts. 😉

The Formula & Application

ud4

Speaking of the inside, get a look at them bristles! #catcall

I found the bushy applicator to be very helpful when it came to getting a generous amount of mascara to cover my lashes. The consistency was a tad wet, but went on smooth, stuck on nicely and didn’t clump. Just really made by lashes: Bolder, blacker, and dare I say…badder?  The smell wasn’t overly potent either, which was a plus since I’ve whiffed some stanky ones lately. (This is not a pasttime of mine, I promise. But there’s no way you can get 100% pure fruit mascara on your eyes without tearing up from rotten fruit odors.)

The Results

(before on the left, after on the right)

ud3

Dayum! Amirite? I was so pleased to see the results! I have such light  eyelashes that seem to disappear without the application of eyeliner. It’s nice to see a mascara that makes my eyes pop without the added backdrop! I mean, look at that difference. Left: bald eyes Right: lashes comparable to the flowy locks of Sofia Vergara.

In short, I will be repurchasing this mascara when it releases on July 13th. What about you? Are you excited for Urban Decay’s newest mascara release? Did you get to sample it? Share your thoughts with me!

Until next time!

Ipsy Review: June 2014

Personal life has lead me to be a little MIA on this blog and all the things I want to share, but no more! I have a couple of fun posts coming out soon to get me back on track for follypops! And, without much further ado, here is my June 2014 review for Ipsy! Let’s take a look at the products!

allproducts

Products: (3 full size, 1 deluxe sample, 1 reg sample)

Marc Anthony Dream Waves Beach Spray: $3.50

Nyx Butter Gloss: $5

Ofra Eybrow Pencil: $13

Be A Bombshell Lash Out Mascara: $15

RealTree Perfume: $1

Bag Total: $37.50

sprayglosspencil

Let me start off by saying, Ipsy really nailed the hot summer look for this bag. Flowery print, statement look, all around great products–so hitting the nail on the head this month! Now on to the products:

I LOVED the Marc Anthony beach spray. Talk about a new summer staple!! First off, it has a faint smell of coconut (which I adore) so it feels like you’re taking the beach with you and I love how it gives texture to your hair without making it super stiff if you apply it lightly. Not to mention, full size of it at Ulta is only $9. (I’ll be repurchasing this bad boy if I ever run out of my luxe sample.) That said, while I like the wavy look I got from this product, if you’re looking for curly curls–this is not the product for you. (Try Garnier Fructis Scrunch Gel for super curls) It gives you a gentle wave, but that’s really it.

Moving on, the Nyx butter gloss in creme brulee is going to be a lovely nude glossy lip for me this summer if I’m walking around on a dry day. It was soft and pretty, but at the same time, I’m not much of a gloss fan. I hate when my hair gets stuck kissing my lips! Though, if I’m looking for a relatively matte colored gloss in the future, I will definitely turn to this.

While I wasn’t exactly in need of a gloss, Ipsy totally read my mind when it came to at least one necessity with the Ofra eyebrow pencil. The color (dark brown?) was perfect for my eyebrows and applied softly. The only downside is that it is a pencil that requires sharpening–which I don’t care for because sharpeners have a tendency to spill all over my bag, but I can’t wait to really get a lot of use with this pencil. So far, I am a fan!

mascaraperfume

The Be A Bombshell mascara was…mascara. I mean, what can I say really? The formula is decent–not too goopy. The brush was nice and made application easy. Though I will say that the overall look on my lashes was only okay. I tend to like my lashes on the more dramatic side–so I like em bold and lengthened. (I’m currently hooked on Maybelline’s Illegal Length mascara. LOVE IT!) This may not be my cup of tea, but it could be yours! I would suggest giving it at least a try. Only downside is that it’s on the pricier side.

My least favorite item in this bag was the perfume–but I think mostly because it came at the wrong time for me. Realtree was a little spicier than the smells I’m obsessed with currently. Early summer always makes me crave fruity scents in the summer heat, (Hello Escada, my old friend!) but I suspect this might be a great scent for late summer-early fall. The spices with the hints of citrus would be great as the weather dries out but still has that late day heat. (I will reassess in a couple of months and report back!)

bag

OMG, that bag! This one is my favorite, by far! Thanks to the genius of Rebecca Minkoff for the design! Classy black, with beautiful select color for the flowers, a pop red zipper and metal zip–pure love. It’s my new everyday makeup bag in my purse.

The Conclusion

This is, so far, my absolute favorite bag. It gave me a full look in one bag, had 3 full size products AND a deluxe one included, I will get decent use out of all these products, and I loved the bag. Overall, a win and totally worth it this month. Big YAY! Can’t wait to rock it all during upcoming hot summer nights.

What about you? Did you get an Ipsy bag you loved for June? If not, what were the bummers? Where will you be wearing your products?

Until next month Ipsy lovers~

Birchbox Vs Ipsy: May 2014

BoxesI know this is super late in the month, but was sick all last week and it seemed like it took forever for my Ipsy to arrive! But better late than never, amirite? For those of you who don’t know about either of box subscriptions, Birchbox and Ipsy are both beauty subscriptions for $10 a month. Birchbox tends to feature smaller sample sizes that are often more higher end brands and incorporates more of a variety than just beauty. (Lifestyle, skin care, etc)  Ipsy features more full size-luxury size samples of often times more drugstore-lower end brands. Ipsy tends to favor strictly beauty options, but has recently surprised me with some great skincare samples! I will include my referral links down below!

Okay, that said, let’s get to the box battle!

First Up: Bichbox
birchbox

Brands: Marcelle, Supergoop!, Pixi, Nexxus, SmartyPants  |  Box Value: $18

For the past couple of boxes, I have been truly unimpressed with Birchbox. Everything I received seemed like freebies I could get by asking any Sephora employee for a sample to try. It was very discouraging–especially since it was of things that really weren’t hitting it for me! So I didn’t even look forward to the itty bitty tests Birchbox was providing! This box was happily a step up from what it has been–and actually had a full sized item! (GASP! For once!!) Though I must admit that after this box, my 6 month subscription ended and I chose not to continue it. I was really hoping it would blow my mind for me to keep it, but it didn’t. Let’s look at the products:

birchbox2Case in point of freebies you could get at Sephora: the Nexxus Color Hair Trio. Honestly, for a color hair care product, this sample would in no way tell me if it could do what it says. So I had to base the product on a one wash trial–and that didn’t even hold up for just cleanliness standards. I couldn’t wash out the serum very well with the shampoo/conditioner and my hair ended up being super greasy and weighed down, definitely not my cup of tea. I have very thin hair, so I don’t know if that was a factor, but still…

Though on a happy note, the second product pictured was the full size item of pixi’s shea butter lip balm. Now, I have recently fallen in love with pixi products, (mostly because I’m a target-a-holic) so I was extremely excited to see this in my Birchbox! (especially since I usually get pixi products in Ipsy) And that excitement didn’t fade when I tried it! The color payoff is AWESOME and it LASTS–all the while keeping my lips feeling amazing. (Gotta love hydration!)  Here’s a preview of the color–it looks a little purple-y in that picture, but it’s really a more bright/bold pink which I am in love with!
birchboxtest

birchbox1Most of the other samples were too small for me to see if I would actually like them–the vitamins only had 2 in the sample which didn’t taste all that great and were gummy…not a fan of that. And the sunscreen MIGHT cover my face like…once. So I guess I can save that for a day out adventuring.

Though those didn’t hit the mark, I LOVED the BB cream. It was actually a decently full tube, so I have already gotten a few used out of it and it leaves my skin glowy and smooth. PERF for summer, amirite? (Goodbye cream foundation, hello bb cream!) Now when all is said and done, I will say the one good thing that Birchbox has is a really decent point system (if you can find it and you actually get new featured products vs old ones which always seemed to be my lot in life…) and I was able to review a couple of items in my birchbox to gain some points which I finally could redeem! (Every 100 points = $10 to spend in the Birchbox store) So as a fare-thee-well to Birchbox, I used my $10 on the Marcelle BB cream. (Still cost me $17! It was indeed a splurge, but I forsee it being a go to this summer!)

Don’t get me wrong, Birchbox may still be for you. I just couldn’t see myself renewing at this point. Maybe in the future…But if you would like to check it out now, try this link: https://www.birchbox.com/invite/follypops (PS Birchbox also has a really great referral point system!)

 Next up to bat: Ipsy

ipsy

Brands: Avene, Balanced Guru, Boo-Boo Cover Up, Pacifica, Hang Ten,  |   Box Value: $48.50

Okay, like I said before, Ipsy has more full sized-luxury sized products that prove to be a total bang for your buck! And this month didn’t disappoint! I’m so excited to gush, so let’s get to it:
ipsy2So, at first glance I was not really excited about the Avene Thermal Spring Water spray. Water in a can? Doesn’t sound appealing even with “healing attributes”. (It’s supposed to be good for your skin after say a sunburn or dry effects..) Though I tried it and I have to retract my first thoughts. It’s actually pretty nice and kind of acts like a refreshing toner (which I’m all about…don’t even get me started on my LUSH obsession) so I mark this product as a win.

Then there’s the Hang Ten sample…I mean, once again, it’s sunscreen. I appreciate the try but I wish it was specifically face sunscreen or a moisturizing tinted sunscreen for the face. Since it is neither, I see it as only so-so, BUT the sample size is much more generous than Birchbox’s was, so not all is lost. Speaking of good sample sizes, hello hair oil! The Balanced Guru sample was a full on travel size version (I know, I checked!) and will probably last me an entire year before I’m even close to done! (Hair oil goes a long way for me. Re: thin hair) The biggest downfall: I’m not a huge fan of the lemon grass smell, but I can probably get past that if I mix it with another product.

ipsy1

Once again, here’s what I’m talking about–full size!! Horay!! So I’m going to be honest, I laughed when I saw the name of the Boo-Boo Cover-Up, but I instantly felt stupid when I used it. I LOVE this stuff. It’s a little thicker so it really covers up the troubled areas and it’s a nice smooth consistency. Oh, and get this, it’s made in Canada. (Which maybe explains why it’s on the pricier side?) I like trying things from other countries!

The pacifica eyeshadow duo (which I can’t find on their site, but it has to be a full sized product if not a really hefty luxury sample) was not particularly of colors that I use too often and to be honest, didn’t have that great of a color build up. But if I can’t use them, I know a couple people who can and who would appreciate the decent sized product. View thecolors here:

ipsytest

Last, but not least, my favorite thing about Ipsy is that when all is said and done, you get a reusable makeup bag with every one. This month’s was a cute “green” themed burlap bag. I loved it especially since it fit more products than past ones so I could stuff more in it for my purse! (I use them as on the go makeup bags!)

ipsy3

Ipsy also has a point system, but it takes a little more to achieve their 1000 points for a product goal. (Though they recently upped some of the point earning by giving you facebook sharing points, points for “created looks” and of course referrals.)

Another downside: they choose the 1000 pt product for you, so you can’t just shop for them like with Birchbox. Ipsy usually changes them every month though, so once you have the necessary amount, just hold out for when something you love comes along! If you’re intersted in trying Ipsy, here’s a link you might find helpful! http://www.ipsy.com/r/1lri

The Verdict

This was surprisingly more tough than I thought it would be mostly because Birchbox gave me 2 really great products that I am in love with currently. BUT, I have to give it to Ipsy. Ipsy gave me a bunch of wonderfully sized products to use that I was even surprised to find that I liked, plus the value is just so hard to beat! What about you? Do you think you would have ruled the other way? Or if you are a subscriber, what did you get in your bags/boxes? I’d be happy to hear!! Also, if you have any subscription services you think I would like to try, let me know!

Health Kicks: Cauliflower Crust Pizza Review

Okay so recently I have been trying to train myself to live a healthier lifestyle. (Especially with the dreaded swimsuit season fast approaching.) So I’ve really been looking at what I eat, what I do for activities, and what products I’ve been using. I want to feel like a superhero-athlete-model 100% of the time (I want to feel like I can conquer the world and look like an absolute badass doing it) and that outcome takes a lot of daily choices that I need to start making.

One of which is healthier eating. I never really considered my appetite one that was outlandishly bad for me, I LOVE veggies and incorporate them in every meal, but I have a ton of junk food indulgences that I need to stop. (Midnight drunk food trips to halel stands?…erm…guilty…) I mean, I enjoy stuff that is good for me, why not just stick with that? I realize that sometimes they don’t seem as exciting if I’ve had the same meals over and over again–so it’s time for me to be adventurous and branch out from the overdone stirfrys and salads.

Thus leads me to the DUN DUN DUNNNNN: Cauliflower Crust Pizza! (I don’t know why I added the ‘dun dun dunnn’ it’s actually not menacing at all…) I have been hearing about this dish a lot and thought I would give it to go. I mean, I love cauliflower, I love pizza…so why not? I was a little worried the prep would be a little too crazy for me to handle on a work night, but it actually turned out better than I thought! Here’s what  Idid:

Step One: Gather ingredients
1

Pictured above: bite sized mozzarella balls, grape tomatoes, cauliflower head (1/2), minced garlic, parmesan grated cheese, large egg (1), parchment paper. (Not pictured, spices I used: crushed red pepper,  balsamic vinegar, onion powder, olive oil, dried basil, fresh basil, dried oregano, black pepper, salt.)

NOTE: This first attempt was a huge improvisation/test, so I did not follow the recipe 100% like I should have. (Recipe I kind of followed here.) Second Note: I don’t have a ton of time to make multiple grocery stops during my week, so a lot of these ingredients are just things I had in my fridge and not gourmet/fresh… (i.e. garlic, parmesan…) I also didn’t have the shredded mozzarella cheese, which I will explain later on why I regret that.  (And yes, I was too lazy to shred the little mozzarella balls. Girl had to sleep and couldn’t waste all night on this!)  While I got everything I needed, I set the oven to 425 degrees to heat up!

Step Two: Sauté some garlic & tomatoes
3

Remember how I said I didn’t follow the recipe 100%? Yeah, this step was part of that. Instead of tomato sauce, I decided I just wanted to sauté some grape tomatoes with garlic & seasoning. No regrets with this choice. If you’d like to replicate what I did, in a small pan combine: 2 tbsp olive oil, some halved grape tomatoes (eyeball it…I think I did like 10 or so, but the more the merrier!), 1 tbsp minced garlic (or maybe more. I love garlic…thus my fantasy of marrying Damon Salvatore from Vampire Diaries could never be… #heartbreak), 1.5 tbsp balsamic vinegar. Season to taste with dried basil, dried oregano, pepper, salt, onion powder, and red pepper flakes. Set your heat to medium and stir frequently. When the tomatoes become a little tender, put them to the side. (Don’t worry, they’ll be heated up again later when you pop this all in the oven.)

Step Three: Make dat crust!

mixture4

This step actually had me the most worried for time constraints! But then I realized my magical blender actually had a chop function! OH HAPPY DAY! Never again shall I pine for a food processor because this baby DID THE TRICK! So after I cut my 1/2 head of cauliflower into florets (keeping most of the stalk because waste not, want not–amirite?) I chopped them babies up in mr. magicblender until they were a fine crumble. Then I popped these delightful crumbles into the microwave for a bit.

NOTE: This next part holds my biggest regrets for this recipe, so heed my wisdom and learn!

In a medium mixing bowl, I combined the warmed crumbles, a pre-whisked egg, and grated parmesan. I also sprinkled in some pepper and salt by sight for seasoning.  What I did not have/combine is the shredded mozzarella–which I regret because that one thing would have served as better glue to hold the crust together. (Instead I ended up with kind of a flaky mess of a crust as an outcome–ah well, we’re not all perfect on our first try, are we?) Once your satisfied with your mixing skills, set the “dough” aside while you lay out some parchment paper on a baking sheet. Then gently spray that sheet with some cooking spray. I did not have cooking spray so I drizzled a tsp of olive oil on the sheet and spread it thin. (MY SECOND REGRET! The olive oil actually ended up probably moistening the crust far more than I would have liked. And I wanted it crunchy! Try and get some cooking spray if you can or your crust might be just as soggy as mine!)

Once your pan is set up, spoon on your “dough” and pat it down so it forms a thin-ish crust. Pop that sucker in the oven until it is golden brown. The longest part of this step was just waiting for things to heat! Not a pain at all!

Step Four: Top it off

Close-up-tomatoes

Once your crust is nice and golden, take it out and spread all your toppings on. I cut up some fresh basil, mozzarella bites, and some additional grape tomatoes to add to my tomato-balsamic-garlic mixture on top. I added a dash of more seasoning (red crushed pepper, oregano, grated parm, salt, pepper) to the top before popping this mouth watering morsel back in the oven to get all melty.

After a short period of time: WAH-LAH! Your healthier pizza alternative is complete!

final

Now, like I said, when I did it, it didn’t turn out perfect. It actually fell apart a little so I was forced to eat it with a fork. (SIGH!) But the taste–the taste was absolutely delicious! I didn’t miss the carb-y crust at all. And the fresh combination not only filled me but didn’t make me feel like a gross, greasy troll after consuming it. WIN! In short, I would so (and will) make it again!! (This time following the recipe a little more closely!)

So what do you think? Will you try this recipe? If you did, how did it come out for you? Leave a comment to this! Or if you have a healthier dish than this for me to try, please let me know!

Folly Ventures: Burlington, VT

A random corner of the states, I know–but one that is near and dear to my heart: Burlington, Vermont. I went recently for a weekend escape from the busy city life and fell in love with the small charmingly eccentric town all over again. It is the perfect mix of social events, a creative community, boutiques, healthy living and friendly personalities. (If only it were not so far away, I would go there much more frequently!)

Now where to go and what to do in this town can vary based on your likes as well as the time of year. However, if you are there for the summer or any time of year, you MUST hit up Church Street.

Church Street is the lively heart of Burlington and houses all the cutest boutiques (with great unique buys for clothes, accessories, and home goods! I ended up grabbing a couple of wonderful artist crafted jewelry pieces from Zinnia’s. LOVE that store! Affordable & adorable, two of my favorite qualities!), street performers, delicious restaurants and fun nightlife. Oh and one of the best features of Vermont? Their strong belief in supporting local business. A majority of products sold and food served are locally made or grown. Some of my favorite restaurants that do this are on streets just off of the main church street stretch:

1.) The Farmhouse Tap & Grill The menu is american at heart and hosts a bunch of dishes prepared with ingredients from local farms. I’ve had their burgers and toast points (with some of the freshest cheese and honey I’ve had at a restaurant). Excellent and savory, to say the least! Though the most attention The Farm House gets is for its extensive craft brew list. The prices aren’t too far fetched but a little on the pricier side.

2.) Flatbread Now, I know this italian-ish restaurant is technically a chain, but I still love it and it too has an emphasis on using local farms for ingredients. I’m not positive if the menu is slightly different at each location for food, but I am sure the drink menu is–another craft beer bar can be found here. The best part about this restaurant? Large portions you can share with big parties–and all the flatbreads are amazing!!

3.) El Corjito Interestingly enough, this place is owned by the same people who own The Farmhouse, so it too has the farm to table concept. This taqueria is so good it usually draws a line that goes out the door and has a pretty lengthy wait. But the wait is worth it! Especially for the margaritas. I had one and am now in love! I have to learn how to replicate them ASAP!

So those are 3 of MANY places to eat downtown. You really could go anywhere and have a great meal, but those are some of my favorites!

Ignoring the gluttony urge, there are plenty of active things to do in Burlington to burn off the calories. There are extensive walking/biking trails that run alongside Lake Champlain, a couple of beaches to enjoy a swim when the weather is warm, plenty of hiking trails (my favorites are the ones by Red Rocks where you can watch daredevils jump of 40-70 ft cliffs), segway tours, and a number of grassy knolls to have a game of frisbee or two. I personally love strolling along to the galleries scattered around town and looking at all the neat local art!

Or if you want to spend a day driving around, there are several breweries in the area (Vermont has the highest number of breweries per capita! My favorite is Magic Hat–very cool designs!), Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory, The Teddy Bear Factory, the Shelburne Museum, nearby mountain trails to hike, and local wineries in Shelburne and the Champlain Islands.

If you do decide to drive out of town, be sure to make it back to Burlington for the nightlife! It thrives with live music and bustling bars–I always have an excellent time whether I’m drinking cheap beers at What Ales You or lounging with a martini at Red Square as I listen to a local band.  Ahhh Burlington, just thinking about you, makes me yearn to return right now! You are forever in my heart.

Spring Haul: Old Navy, H&M, & Francesca’s Closet!

April Showers bring….clothing hauls? I don’t know about you all, but when the sun is out and I finally awaken from my winter hibernation state of mind, I feel the need to shop! (Especially at the nearby strip mall so I can get that healthy dose of shine while peeking my head in the windows.) I definitely got spring fever this weekend and my wallet started to feel the heat, lemme tell you.

First Stop: H & M

HM1

2 for $10 black camis, black floral chiffon tank $14.95, light pink floral scarf $6.95

I am in LOVE with pastel/light colors and flower prints this season (though let’s be honest, who isn’t?) and, lucky for me, they’re everywhere!! I pretty much flocked to anything light and flowery in H&M, but I also got sidetracked by the end of season sweater deals! There was a whole rack of sweaters for just $15 each! Naturally, I had to try on a bunch, but don’t worry–I restrained myself and stuck with this nice loose knit light brown one. (I convinced myself that since its loose knit I could still wear it on cool summer nights…seems legit, right?)

HM2

Loose knit tan sweather $15, cut out light brown flats $15 (I think), navy swimsuit top $17.95

The swimsuits at H&M also caught my eye this year. I was pretty impressed they had tops that actually had something for girls with…bigger girls up top–if you know what I mean. I ended up with a basic navy sweetheart top that fit great and I can match with anything. Oh and I also got the cutest pair of cutout flats that are so comfy!! (They run a little loose though, so if you see them, be warned!)

Second Stop: Francesca’s Collection

FC

Hoopish gold earrings $14, silver drop earrings $12, cloverish gold earrings $9

One of my FAV shops lately has been Francesca’s Collection (am I the only one who wants to call it Francesca’s Closet? Was that its original name or am I just imagining that?) because they have become the source of my jewelry addiction. I physically have to stop myself from going in there and buying more. Don’t get my wrong, I lovelovelove their clothes, home goods, and handbags, but that sparkle is the first thing you see!! Needless to say, when I saw they had a buy 2, get one free deal–I pounced.

(I seriously have such a problem, I had to buy this jewelry organizer at Charming Charlies to sort out my stuff.)

 Third Stop: Old Navy

Old Navy

Peach lace tank top $5, tan patterned maxi skirt $29, striped swim bottoms $15, and flowered swim bottoms $10

Now, Old Navy is notoriously a hit or miss store for me. I either want ALL THE THINGS or none of them. But it was actually on trend when I went. I ravaged the swim section for cute bright bottoms, happened upon the cutest neutral maxi skirt that is going to become a summer staple in my wardrobe, got “motivational” work out gear, and hit up their 70% off rack for the peach tank top! ($5 steal!!)

Purple running tank $12, black running jacket $32

Purple running tank $12, black running jacket $32

Don’t Forget! VS Last Day

VC

Card could be anywhere from $10 to $500 off your purchase!

I recently went through an overhaul of my undergarments and changed up my collection which caused me to attain a couple of “secret reward” cards. They all were usable this month so I of course had to treat myself to some fashionable spring items! I just wanted to remind all you shopaholics that if you have those cards, they expire today! (4/29) So use them while you can!My current VS addiction: the bright flowered boyfriend bras and Pink panties in neon colors!

So that was my spending massacre! I am finally feeling a little ready for spring and am loving all the new bright additions to my closet! How about you? What are you excited to wear this spring? What trends are you loving?
